With the passing of Mzikayifane “Mzi” Elias Khumalo, affectionately known as Mzi, South Africa has lost a dedicated public servant, political leader and servant of the people.

Khumalo passed away on Monday, 10 August 2026, at the age of 54. His passing was mourned across Gauteng and beyond by his family, friends, colleagues, comrades and the many communities he served during a long career in public life.

Born on 01 January 1972 in Witstinkhoutboom, now known as Badirile, Randfontein, Mzi Khumalo's journey into public life began at a young age. He became involved in student and youth activism during the 1980s and early 1990s, including through the Congress of South African Students (COSAS) in Mohlakeng, Randfontein.

Those early years of activism would lay the foundation for a lifetime dedicated to public service and the advancement of his community.

Over the years, Khumalo served in various leadership structures of the African National Congress and the ANC Youth League, particularly on the West Rand and in Gauteng. His political journey eventually took him into local government, provincial government and the Gauteng Provincial Legislature.

His public service career included serving as a councillor in the Randfontein Transitional Local Council, Political Adviser to the Executive Mayor of the West Rand District Municipality and Political Adviser to the Speaker of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature.

He later served as Speaker of the Randfontein Local Municipality, before becoming Executive Mayor of Randfontein. Following the establishment of the Rand West City Local Municipality, he became its inaugural Executive Mayor, serving the people of the municipality during an important period in its formation and development.

In 2019, Mzi Khumalo was elected to the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, where he served as Chief Whip of the ANC Caucus and Majority Party.

In 2022, he was appointed MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, e-Government, Research and Development in the Gauteng Provincial Government.

Following the 2024 provincial elections, he returned to the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, where he was appointed Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA).

It was a position he held until his passing.

Throughout his career, Khumalo brought with him extensive experience in local government and a deep understanding of the challenges facing municipalities and communities. His work in public service focused on governance, accountability, service delivery and improving the lives of the people he had been elected and appointed to serve.

Those who paid tribute to him remembered him as a committed public servant whose life was characterised by dedication, humility and a strong sense of responsibility.

His passing left a profound void not only in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, but also among the communities of Mohlakeng, Randfontein, Rand West and the broader West Rand. For Mzi Khumalo, public service was not merely a profession. It was a calling that shaped the course of his adult life.

His life will be remembered through the institutions he helped lead, the communities he served, the colleagues and comrades with whom he worked, and the people whose lives were touched by his commitment to public service.

On 15 August 2026, he was laid to rest following a Special Provincial Official Funeral Service, Category 2, granted in recognition of his contribution to government and the people of Gauteng. His final resting place is at Heroes Acre, West Park Cemetery.

Mzikayifane “Mzi” Elias Khumalo leaves behind a legacy of service, leadership and commitment to the people of Gauteng.

Though his life was cut short, the years he devoted to public service and the contribution he made to his community and province will remain part of his enduring legacy.
